Age at Menarche and its Relationship with Various Anthropometric Variables among Scheduled Caste Adolescent girls of Lucknow City

Abstract

The onset of menstruation in girls, or menarche, is the most commonly reported indicator of maturation during adolescence and also is well-known risk factors for non-communicable disease like, CVD, Type II diabetes, and cancer. Several studies have shown that girls who undergo menarche at a relatively young age tend to be more obese as adults. However, because childhood (premenarcheal) levels of weight and height are associated with an earlier menarche, the increased prevalence of adult obesity among early maturers may largely reflect the persistence of childhood obesity into adulthood. Age at menarche is an important developmental milestone and is known to be influenced by genetic factors The onset of menstruation in girls, or menarche, is the most commonly reported indicator of maturation during adolescence. It is also associated with infant morbidity and mortality. The aim of the present study was to understand the relationship of age at menarche with adult body dimensions and body composition among 200 adult school girls of Lucknow city. Anthropometric measurements namely, height, weight, and medial calf were taken following standard techniques. BMI, were computed subsequently. Correlation analysis were done in order to understand the relationship between age at menarche with each variable
