Abstract

Plant and animal cells are affected differently by flooding and waterlogging. These two phenomena initiate cascade of events in salt-, water-, and drought-loving cells. Some most obvious features is nuclear malfunction and either abrupt or slow cytoplasmic streaming. In concentrated cells, cell bursting is possible although the degree to which cells die varies due to cell structure differences. This paper addresses what happens to cells after flooding and waterlogging. Examples of plants are provided, as well as the effects of these two phenomena on amoeba and hydra are discussed.
