Abstract

One of the main reasons for the decline of the Harappan culture in 1500 B.C. was the arrival of Aryans. Afterwards the period was divided into two parts. One was Early Vedic Period or Rig Vedic Period (1500 B.C1000 B.C.) and other one was Later Vedic Period (1000B.C.-600 B.C.). The social division on the basis of caste was not available during Rig Vedic period but in later Vedic period the social life was divided into four Verna systems (Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas and Sudras). The Brahmins are very pronounced and a dominating community in India and they are strictly vegetarian consuming ghee, saturated fatty acid during the Brahma-Bhojana and prone toward the non-communicable diseases. The majority of population is found to be practicing vegetarianism (95.25%). Most Brahmin men usually avoid alcohol and smoking but it is strictly forbidden for women. Present study conducted on the Gaur Brahmins of National Capital Region/Delhi, of 506 households using pretested interview schedules (25-70years). More than 95% were found to be literate (97.03%). Major occupation of the individuals found was business. The marital status approximately 80% in which 78.99% are males and 80.48% are females.
