The key to good health is the practice of good hygiene. The provision of sanitation (safe human excreta facilities) at home along with improved hygiene behaviour and clean and safe water are the primary drivers of public health. Unless we can secure access to sanitation for the billions of poor people around the world who are presently without it, our battle against the huge burden of infectious diseases, particularly in the developing world, will never be won.
“We shall not finally defeat AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, or any of the other infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking water, sanitation and basic healthcare.”
— Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General, United Nations
