As Asia rises to global preponderance again, after centuries of subjection or stagnation, Western powers are vying to simultaneously engage and contain their emerging rivals in order to maintain their dominance. Building international regional cooperation in Asia is vital for the achievement of sustainable peace and prosperity. It is hoped that SAARC will help meet this goal.
