Abstract

Civil society today is seen as a necessary component of a liberal, modern society as well as a check on the powers of the state. In China, civil society in a specific form, has been building since the early twentieth century and is now being decisively shaped by the internet and other globalising factors. It can be a liberating tool from a totalitarian system but it can also become an instrument of control by supranational imperialist, economic and political forces.
