It is now increasingly recognised that Washington's AfPak strategy as enunciated in March earlier this year is riddled with contradictions and entails a policy path that runs contrary to Indian geostrategic interests. In a comprehensive and timely assessment, this article offers a compelling argument for India to question the fundamental premise of such a strategy. In doing so, the author refutes a proposition that has gained currency in Indian strategic discourse — that India has a vital security interest in upholding the intangibility of the Durand Line and thus the territorial integrity of the Pakistani state.
