After resolving longstanding border disputes with successor states of the Soviet Union, China has established a strategic partnership with the Russian Federation and undertaken to extend its political, cultural and economic influence across Central Asia. Beijing is principally committed to crushing separatism in the Xinjiang, Tibetan and Inner Mongolian autonomous regions, curbing terrorism, drug trafficking and Islamic fundamentalism in neighbouring states, checking the military influence of the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and securing reliable overland energy deliveries and commercial routes.
