The enduring threat of thermo-nuclear annihilation requires mankind to re-evaluate the strategies applied to ban and decommission all atomic weapons. Non-proliferation measures are failing as shown by the growing use of depleted uranium munitions and the US for one is developing new tactical and strategic nuclear capabilities to augment its acknowledged stockpile of 5000 warheads, whereas Russia has adopted a new doctrine to retaliate against any aggressor with nuclear strikes. Major reforms of the international system are in order and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, along with other concerned bodies, should undertake a global campaign to mobilise people against this menace and bring together all the states of the UN that have no military nuclear arsenals against the small minority of countries which do.
