This paper argues that ASEAN laid the basis for a new Asia-centric world order by providing a platform for regional cooperation that now extends to Japan, China and India, the leading powers on the continent as the result of a gradual expansion which began in 1989. India intends to integrate further with East Asia according to the principles enshrined in the Regional Forum founded in 1994 and the East Asia Summit set up in 2005, at a time when the region is rapidly rising towards economic preponderance.
