A major irritant in the relations between India and China is the status of the Dalai Lama and his government in exile in Dharamshala. This article examines the ongoing negotiation process between the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) and the exiled Tibetans in a context of unrest and repression in the Tibet Autonomous Region and adjoining areas of China where Tibetans live. Taking note of the long standing deadlock in the dialogue, it proposes to call upon the wisdom of Confucius for resolving the dispute and finding a “Middle Path” formula, satisfactory to both parties and conducive to a settlement of Indo-Chinese border disputes.
