India and China are two prominent ancient world civilisations with considerable influence in Central, South and Southeast Asia. Together they account for 35 per cent of the world's population and 15 per cent of the Earth's geographical area. They are both emerging powers that could make the twenty-first century an “Asian Century”. However, the suspected imperialistic-military ambitions and consequent assertion of China as a global hegemon through its rapidly modernising, powerful army and fast expanding economy, need to be contained by the international community with a firm resolve to protect and preserve the peace, prosperity and security not only of South and Southeast Asia but the whole world.
