Here is an analysis of the genesis of the conflict in Syria that addresses the questions of how and why the internal crisis became internationalised. It argues that the conflict is increasingly being driven and overshadowed by geostrategic competition among other regional and extra-regional powers (Iran, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and UNSC members), which has given the conflict the complexion of an intractable proxy war. Possible implications of the crisis for the future of the greater Middle East are briefly covered at the end.
