Abstract

The author compares distinct aspects of local governance in rural areas in India, Australia and the US. He presents information collected first hand during a study conducted in the Indian village of Ramgarh (Uttar Pradesh) over the course of one week and data amalgamated from different sources, both primary and secondary, containing relevant information about the three countries. While the paper focuses on comparing local governments in these countries as an overview, it draws parallels and distinctions between governance in Ramgarh, East Arnhem Shire, Northern Territory, Australia and Sheridan County, Wyoming, US. It also places special emphasis on differences in constitutional recognition, structure, function and funding.
