Abstract

Problems faced by people dislocated by the IIM-R and NUSRL-J institutional projects as well as the UCIL mining project in Jharkhand are characteristic of many other parts of India. In Ranchi and Jaduguda, poor peasants organised themselves and formed associations to resist forced acquisition of their land by district administrations. Land acquisition has destroyed people's livelihood and social setting and violated basic human rights. The major impact of the displacement and takeover of tribal homelands has been the denigration of their culture, customs and language by mainstream communities. This paper also examines impoverishment risk factors and their implications for poor people based on field data collected in the districts of East Singhbhum and Ranchi.
