Myanmar's 2010 general elections, the installation of a new government on 30 March 2011, Aung San Suu Kyi's participation in parliament and the latest phase of the transition to democracy—all give hope for peace and stability after decades of military rule in the country. Regional and international diplomatic and political developments have helped foster amicable relations with most Asian neighbours. By examining the relationship between India and Myanmar, this paper asserts that in the long run India would have a better chance of exerting economic and political pressure by courting Myanmar's new government. This may also help it connect with the large and fast developing markets of the ASEAN region as well as East and South Asia. In addition, continuing the Look East Policy and furthering bilateral border trade between Northeast India and Myanmar could help develop that isolated region.
