Abstract

This article retraces the history of the widening often violent competition between the two great Middle Eastern Abrahamic offshoots—Christianity and Islam—and shows how they have shaped the world of today. The renascent conflict between the followers of these two religions poses a major threat to mankind and both Europe and South Asia may be plunged into turmoil by forces emanating from the Middle East–North African region. Cooperation between Europe and India could help tone down the influence of militant religious expansionism on the basis of India's nonviolent and inclusive oriental philosophy.
