West Asia is currently in the midst of tumultuous changes due to atypical forces that have compelled member-states to maintain alliances with the major powers. These have also brought about new economic and security challenges and patterns of relationships, both within the region as well as with countries with major stakes in terms of oil and natural gas. The fundamental challenge is to envision ways for orderly change in West Asia so that lasting peace and security may be found. There has been much speculation amongst scholars regarding the future course of the “Arab Spring”, on whether this turbulent upsurge would peter out, remaining an isolated event in contemporary history or the chain of events would leave behind a significant mark throughout the Arab world.
