India today needs to evolve a suitable social system to take it into the future. The original varna order degenerated into a rigid caste hierarchy with more faults than merits and must be reinvented to keep abreast of modern times. This paper examines the causes of the distortions and suggests measures to rectify or even eliminate them in view of that fact. However, the elimination of the varna system could cause serious problems leaving the country with limited options for dealing with the scenario. Taking into account current circumstances, this paper also makes a number of suggestions for improving governance in the spirit of the country's ancestral civilisation.
