Globalisation has led to the opening up of the Indian economy to foreign direct investment by providing facilities for foreign companies to invest in different fields of economic activity and removing barriers and obstacles for the entry of multinational corporations. Supporters of globalisation see it as an engine of growth and technical advancement. Critics argue that it has widened the gap between nations, led to the exploitation of resources, the destruction of the environment and a loss of national sovereignty. In the Indian context, while globalisation has accelerated the flow and interconnectedness of capital, goods, information, people and technology, it has also intensifi ed disconnection, exclusion and marginalisation while creating a new privileged minority within the disadvantaged section of society. This article shows how globalisation touches upon issues of well-being and social justice and analyses its effects on the marginalised to understand rising inequalities in India.
