With the rise of Asian nations, the US has enhanced its engagement in the Asia-Pacific economically, militarily, socioculturally and through multilateral institutions. Washington appears to regard New Delhi as a linchpin in this mission, aims to establish a long-term strategic partnership and looks ready to support it as a regional economic anchor. On the other hand, the US has adopted a different approach towards China over the security dilemma in the Western Pacific, particularly the South China Sea. Keeping in mind China's behaviour in the unsettled border regions and its penetration in the India Ocean, New Delhi too is interested in Washington's pivot. Nonetheless, India realises it cannot fully ignore its largest neighbour and economic partner or move too close to the US of the risk of undermining peace in Sino-Indian relations. It is imperative for India to work towards good relations with both countries.
