Abstract

The Second World War ushered in a new generation of military technologies. With the dramatic revolution brought about by nuclear weapons, the world ventured into the atomic age. Until then they were not part of the defence strategy of nations. Soon however, the weapons became the “pride” of many arsenals, until it was realised that subsequent proliferation threatened all life on Earth. The onus was on states not to use nuclear weapons against others and if used‚ face subsequent reprisals. The theory of nuclear politics attempted to justify the use of those weapons, posing a challenge to ethics, law and humanity.
