Abstract

Noting that the European Union has so far chosen to neglect or even ignore the BRICS association, regarded as a challenge to Western dominance, this article proposes a policy of cooperation between the EU and BRICS based on the initiative of Italian and other think-tanks in Europe concerned with Mediterranean area development and relations with Asia and Africa. The paper spells out the massive infrastructural projects promoted by the BRICS on all continents and advocates European institutional involvement, with special regard for proposals to reform the global financial system, invest in the real economy, rein in and regulate speculation and create a new basket of currencies to replace the doomed US dollar-centric regime, which is heading towards a debt bubble meltdown larger than the 2007–08 financial crisis.
