This article reviews the size and role of the Indian community in the US and suggests measures to strengthen bonds with the mother country. Indians in America are characterised by their high educational and economic status, which on average places them above almost all other ethnic groups including the “white” majority. They are proud of their identity and origins, retain strong bonds with families in India even though most are settled permanently in the US and are active in American political life. The Government of India has taken a number of measures to facilitate the involvement of overseas Indians in the nation's economy and keep them connected with their native culture. Indian Americans have formed various associations to represent the interests of the community and promote Indo-US relations. In recent years, their influence on US foreign policy towards India and South Asia has grown while many of them have risen to high positions in the legislative and executive branches of local, state and federal government.
