Humankind has always attempted to escape from armed conflict, food insecurity, human rights abuse and violation, persecution, poverty and terrorism. In the last two decades, there has been a substantial rise in the number of refugees and displaced persons across the world. As the problem of refugees has a universal character, there is a need to strengthen international cooperation in sharing the burden. This paper discusses the definition of “refugees”, their origin and numbers as well as the global issues that have escalated through the influx of refugees from wars and conflicts in the recent past. It also examines the key principles adopted in the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants and analyses how they could integrate the international community as a combined force for providing refuge to displaced people.
