Abstract

Brazil has undergone a peaceful economic and social transformation to bring about growth and stability in the South American region. It may be viewed as an emerging economy where investments in renewable sources of energy have had positive impacts on decreasing dependence on energy imports. This paper discusses how Brazil and the US have evolved their relationship on the issue of ethanol. It analyses the different methods used in the production of ethanol and the environmental and social consequences. It also examines American trade and tariff barriers and their impact on Brazilian ethanol as well as on global biofuel prices.
