Abstract

India is keen on joining the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and play a more important and positive role in the sphere of nuclear non-proliferation. New Delhi is looking to upgrade its status and have a greater say in the group's mandatory scope. It is hoping to remove the impediments in the way of its accession. India's membership of the NSG has been a central concern over the past few months and has become a critical foreign policy issue for the Narendra Modi government. As such during the prime minister's visits to Mexico, Switzerland, the US and other countries, he garnered support for India's membership, raised at the NSG plenary in Seoul in June 2016.
