Abstract

Multilateralism is in retreat in trade matters and economically more developed and prosperous countries, such as the US, are pushing for regional trade blocs and disregarding the recommendations of the WTO at the Doha round. This article analyses the situation in three sections. It examines the political economy of megaregionals, outlines the confl ict between Doha issues and twenty-fi rst century ones and explores the prospects for reconciliation through the clause of special and differential treatment rejected by the more powerful states.
