The soil organic and inorganic carbon reservoir is an important component of the global carbon cycle. Soil carbon sequestration implies the transfer of atmospheric carbon dioxide into pedologic carbon stocks by increasing soil organic and inorganic components on a long-term basis thereby creating a positive ecosystem carbon budget. The soils of India are severely depleted of their soil organic carbon stocks and enhancing and maintaining the concentration above the critical threshold is essential to improving soil quality. The identification and adoption of recommended management practices are important to carbon sequestration. Green manures and organic amendments are vital natural resources for conserving and sustaining soil productivity.
