This article provides a perspective on India’s northeast region and the factors that impact its security and development. It also analyses the historical causes of the insurgencies/militant uprisings, the present status in each of the seven states and the key issues for conflict resolution. There is no doubt that a secure and peaceful northeast is a prerequisite for developmental and economic initiatives, which in turn would make this resource rich region a launchpad for India’s commercial and industrial ventures eastwards.
