The main sources of water in Central Asia are the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, mostly fed by snow and glacier melt from the Pamir, Hindu Kush and Tien Shan mountain ranges. While water is one of the most important natural resources in Central Asia, water sharing is one of the most contentious issues. The countries of the region have already spent a great deal of energy for improving relations and have resolved many issues related to decades-long border conflicts. They are now reviewing water disputes and drawing up plans for joint water resource management. Ownership of infrastructure needs to be resolved alongside the border issue. Nonetheless, officials on all sides have clarified, especially to the local populace, that no side would cede territorial claims. Ultimately, there are intrinsically no good or bad boundaries, only good or bad relations between states.
