Abstract

Supplementary education is not a new phenomenon but an unexplored area as evident in the existing literature. Earlier supplementary education was known as private tutoring which worked as helping hand to mainstream education. Globalization and reforms in education sector have introduced various factors which have changed the nature and magnitude of mainstream education as well as supplementary education. Frequent changes in the education sector have affected the nature of supplementary education such as changing pattern of entrance examination, introduction of professional courses and demand-supply gap in the education sector. In the present era, it is changing in terms of its character, growth, type of consumers and providers and impact on society and education system. Thus, it is necessary to study and analyse global experiences to shed clarity on the subject and also forecast the future discourse on supplementary education in India.
