The article reviews the convoluted history of the dispute about Kashmir between India and Pakistan since the independence of the two countries in 1947. The author argues that the conflict permanently opposes the two states because it is rooted in their critical but divergent political interests and ideological founding principles and he discusses the various possible settlements that have been envisioned in the last decades
