Abstract

The article discusses a study focused on Tim Berners-Lee’s writings from 2001 to 2020 and the digital text analysis tool—Voyant Tools—was used to display the thematic evolution. To begin with, the corpus was formed by collecting 69 articles written by Berners-Lee. Then, different tools such as Cirrus, Summary, Trends, Topics, and Phrases were used for examining the vocabulary usage patterns, topic frequency distribution, and changes in focus over time. The analysis brought to light several terms which were frequently mentioned throughout the research and once again these presented the themes of everlasting interest to Berners-Lee: data, web, and semantic technology. The analysis of word frequency patterns revealed the times when such concerns as user rights or openness to the digital sphere became more prominent, indicating a shift in Berners-Lee’s texts. The use of visualization tools in the study facilitated the coining of complex academic issues as more accessible and attractive, thus promoting technical discourse to drive public engagement. This study, therefore, illustrates that digital text analysis can be a powerful instrument in interpreting the long-term intellectual trajectories and offering a more meaningful rendition of scholarly communication for wider audiences.
