TEPCO has been developing various technologies to improve the cost-effectiveness and operation of pumped storage power stations and improve power system stabilization functions. It has already been reported that TEPCO has established the technologies of the adjustable speed systems for pumped storage power stations and the large capacity ultra-high head reversible pump turbines with more than 700 m, and introduced them to the existing and new power stations. At the HYDRO 2002 (IHA international conference in 2002), TEPCO also reported on the development of a new type reversible pump turbine runner. This new type runner with superior hydraulic characteristics to the conventional type runner can improve the costeffectiveness and operation of pumped storage power stations. This paper reports on the studies of the design and manufacturing of this new type runner for the first application to one existing pumped storage power station, and on the results of the commissioning tests.
