The chemical nature of gum elastomer determines the basic properties of the cable manufactured out of it. However, gum rubber being a thermoplastic in nature is very soft, soluble and fusible. It is very nervy and hence can not be processed as such. To improve processing and enhance inherent property of gum elastomer, numerous chemicals and additives are incorporated into it through compounding. The compounded elastomer is then extruded on a conductor and the insulated conductor is cross-linked to convert the thermoplastic compound into thermoset which is elastic, insoluble and infusible.
