Mexico is Latin-America's leading country in terms of wastewater reuse with a total reuse area of approximately 350,000 ha. However, reuse of treated wastewater is still highly neglected, and entails a high risk of transmitting infectious diseases. Furthermore, only 24% of sewage and 11% of reused wastewaters are treated – although Mexico (with 87% sewerage coverage) has amongst the highest level of urban sanitation infrastructure in Latin-America. As a result, the prevalence of helminth worm infections in areas with high sewage reuse like the Mezquital Valley is greater than 45%.
