North-eastern states in India can be classified as multi hazard risk areas as these areas are vulnerable to earthquakes, landslides and floods. Common people suffer most from the landslides and floods as their economic conditions get largely affected due to failure of road communication as well as power. Economic gap between business community and local people leads to social disturbance causing law and order problems. Therefore, Engineers have a responsibility to plan, construct and maintain engineering structures with technical, qualitative and socio-economic perspective. Some points affecting planning, construction and maintenance of such structures affecting socio-economic conditions of the public are discussed in the paper.
