Abstract

Cavitation damages and silt erosion damages of under water parts of hydro stations is a major concern for any hydropower engineer. This is acute in case of high head projects and very acute in Himalayan region. This paper deals with cavitation damages and silt erosion damages of under water parts of hydropower stations, damage due to combination of both, factors influencing erosion of components, components of hydropower stations effected due to silt erosion, main parameters of silt effecting the wear of turbine parts, de-silting arrangement, operation and maintenance problems in silt prone areas, quality of water, quality and quantity of suspended silts, remedial measures to prevent erosion of components, design consideration for turbines in silty water, influence of design and operating parameters on silt erosion, data required for design of turbine components to withstand erosion due to silt, design consideration of hydro turbine of silty water, hydraulic design considerations, mechanical design consideration. A case study of cavitation and silt erosion damages of Unit-I of Upper Kolab hydroelectric project (4x80 MW) high head project situated in Koraput district of Orissa is made.
