Meteorological, hydrological and climate-related hazards occur frequently and extensively. The spatial and temporal scales of these hazards vary widely from short-lived, violent phenomena of limited extent such as tornadoes, flash floods and severe thunderstorms, to large systems such as tropical and extra-tropical cyclones. At the largest scale, droughts can affect huge sub-continental areas for months to years. Among these hazards, drought and floods are responsible for more significant impacts on human life and property.
