(International Power Generation, February 2004, pp. 33).
Zambia is a country with a growing economy and significant potential for increased energy consumption. The distribution network covers the entire country, and on average almost 1000 new customers per month are connected to Zesco's distribution network, which includes a national control centre, regional control centres and a large number of substations. When the Power Rehabilitation Project was initiated, parts of Zesco's power system were more than 40 years old. Technical audits and studies showed that extensive rehabilitation work was required throughout the power system from power generation to power distribution to secure the power supply. ABB has recently completed the commissioning of Zesco Limited’’ new SCADA and distribution management systems in Zambia. The Modernisation of the distribution system aims at ensuring a reliable power supply to Zesco's customers.
