64. Various Aspects of Project Management in Construction of Tala Hydroelectric Project, Contract Package-1

Hydropower project construction involves multi faceted activities and complex matrix of work structure. A part of the engineering of hydropower projects involves open works and another involves the works of various underground structures. While on one hand open works in hilly terrains itself is a Herculean task – involving training of turbulent rivers, especially during the rainy season, underground works on the other hand is famous for throwing up uncertain risks and challenges. On top of that is the task of sticking to the tough construction schedule. Under such conditions management of projects during construction stage assumes great significance. At Tala Hydroelectric Project, Contract Package-1, the story behind the successful execution of the works is a story of good project management practices. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the various aspects of project management procedures followed during construction of Tala Hydroelectric Project, Contract Package-1 and how these procedures helped in accelerated construction of this project despite initial delays and many uncertainties. This paper also highlights the various datas that were generated as part of the monitoring schedule during execution and how it helped in analyzing the actual schedules vis-a-vis planned programs and application of necessary modifications to achieve success.
