The pace of hydropower development in India got slowed down due to various reasons such as financial crisis, land acquisition, environment clearance, resettlement and rehabilitation etc. Government of India took several steps for the accelerated growth of hydropower to achieve the ideal hydro-thermal mix of 40:60 including incentives to encourage private investment and funding through Infrastructure Development Finance Co. (IDFC). Construction of dams with large capacity reservoirs and run-of-the-river schemes are essential for exploiting the vast available hydropower potential in this country.
