This technical paper, while dealing with the need for an Energy Storage System in the light of demand for peak power as well as need for ideal hydro-thermal mix of 40:60 for flexible operation of grid, deals with the aspects of capacity optimisation of new pumped storage hydroelectric scheme considering the operation of powerhouse, loading/unloading of reservoirs/dams, quantum of tunnel muck disposal, capital cost and unit cost of generation.
