A typical plant steam cycle consists of a steam generator, a distribution system, point-of-use equipment and condensate return. Once the steam has entered the distribution system it will lose energy as it travels along its route to the point of use. It losses energy through condensation and bad trapping practices, improper or inadequate insulation, and leaks in the fittings and valves that contain and control the steam. The energy that is lost cannot be recovered. It must be replaced, which means additional treated water and fuel are needed, increasing costs.
