Hydrogenerators are tailor made machines specially designed for each station in accordance with hydraulic and system conditions and to suit specific requirements of customers. While, generators are designed based on specified operating conditions with permissible variations as stipulated in national and international standards for rotating electrical machines, sometimes, due to peculiar conditions of the grid, abnormal variations of parameters like voltage, frequency, load and power factor etc. hydrogenerator foundations are encountered with abnormal loads, necessitating careful evaluation of the possible forces during operation and designing of the foundation and anchoring of machine for withstanding such forces. Hydrogenerators are quite often required to meet special requirements such as unbalanced loading and safe operation under abnormal conditions like motoring and asynchronous operation with rotor earth fault etc., and are also expected to be safe against seismic loads. This paper highlights basis of design of generator foundation including a case where inadequate grouting of sole plate caused damage to the fabricated structure due to heavy loads and vibrations experienced by the machine.
