Abstract

Creation of dams and their safety is essential for the overall development. Generally sufficient information is not available to carry out the flood frequency analysis. It is beyond doubt that satellites can provide data bank that can be suitably analyzed to extract the information for carrying out these studies. In this study an attempt has been made to review some of the existing methods for flood estimation. Attempt has also been made to extract the geomorphic parameters from satellite based data. Multivariate optimization technique, Linear Mixing Modelling (LMM) has proposed to extract the most influential linear composite. It was found the first component accounts for about 61% variation in the data. Corresponding to this component total score was obtained through variable loadings. Total score is highly related to the mean annual flood. Flood frequency model on regional basis is developed having total score as input. These models are statistically significant. LMM increases the information density by compressing the data considerably. It is expected that this type of model can be easily developed for any area under investigation.
