19. Validation of Abnormal Change in Water Level Around Visatpura Taluka Kadi District Mahesana Using Advance Ground Water Data Management & Application Software

Abstract

A Piezometer is drilled at Visatpura site under hydrology project to monitor changes in hydraulic head in upper semi-confined acquifer of the Kadi region of the Mahesana District. A sudden rise in the water level from 54 m to 8.0 m was observed while monitoring the Piezometer in month of April 2002. Hence a Geohydrological Survey & Investigation around village Visatpura Taluka Kadi, District Mahesana was proposed to find out the possible reason for abnormal rise in water level of Piezometer which is drilled down to the depth of 120 m. The Piezometer site falls under the Narmada Canal command. Two Main canals of SSP are passing through the study area. (1) Saurashtra Branch Canal & (2) Narmada Main Canal for North Gujarat & border of Rajasthan. In first phase of investigation it was predicted that the rise in water level might be due to release of surface water in unlined Narmada canal passing near by the village Visatpura. Therefore a proposal of detailed S&I in the area was recommended to find out the possibilities of canal seepage & to demarcate area influenced by the canal water seepage. Due to advancement in Ground water monitoring network each and every drilled Piezometers under hydrology project are installed with digital water level recorder to monitor the change in pressure head of the aquifer tapped in Piezometer. This monitored detail of Visatpura site are retrieved and stored in the Ground water data entry software. These details are analyzed with the help of GWDES to find out possible reason for recharge observed in the Piezometer. The advent of the data storage and data management software became very useful in quick data analysis to reach the final conclusion. If there was no advancement in the monitoring system the rise in water level will be observed only during pre monsoon monitoring i.e. in the month of May 2002 and at that time in absence of large voluminous continuous data flow we might have predicted that possibilities of recharge is due to seepage of water from flowing water in Narmada main canal passing in the area. Thus the advancement in ground water management helped in finding out the possible reason for the sudden recharge in area & contamination of ground water. After analysis of the retrieved data of water level & chemical analysis data of piezometers in the area it was found that the water level of the said piezometer is leakage from the top aquifers. In the absence of the technology it would have taken much time & efforts in analysis of data & establishing the cause of water level rise & deterioration of Ground Water quality of upper semi confined aquifer of the piezometer.
