This paper presents a case study regarding fixation of installed capacity for cascade hydropower development on Padma river valley in Orissa, utilizing the irrigation-oriented supplies to the existing irrigation system and available water head. The installed capacity of a major hydropower stations is normally selected keeping in mind the requirement of the peak demand. But in case of small hydel power schemes, the finalization of installed capacity is site specific. Here, the power scheme has been planned in such a way that, the project could be feasible technically and economically without interference of the existing irrigation system and it's scheduling. The scheme of power development was conceived during construction stage of the parent project, the Harabhangi medium irrigation project at the instance of the Government of India to attempt for small hydel generation at canal head regulators and drops of the existing and different ongoing projects of the state.
