The paper presents systematic planning of a small hydropower scheme proposed to be developed at the existing head regulator constructed in 1955, on the right earthen dyke of the Hirakud Dam across the river Mahanadi for irrigation releases into the Baragarh Canal of Hirakud irrigation system in Orissa state, India. In the quest for increasing availability of electricity focus on tapping the nonconventional energy sources is gaining momentum, where Small Hydro is given priority. The scheme presented in this paper is a typical example, where attempt is made for exploitation of potential sites for small hydropower generation by partial modification of the existing old irrigation structures without interference to the existing irrigation supplies and schedule.
